You’re driving along, minding your own business. Maybe you’re headed to work or to pick up your child from basketball practice. Or maybe you’re just going for a drive for fun. Then suddenly, it happens. A light on your dashboard glows at you ominously. But what does this mysterious symbol mean? Can you keep driving? Or do you need to pull over and get a tow?
Here’s a guide to the most common dashboard lights and what they mean.
First of all, you’ll need to pay attention to the color of the light. If it’s green or blue, it simply means that a particular system is operating. A yellow or orange light means you should take your car for service at the earliest opportunity. A red or flashing light means it may be unsafe to drive.
Engine Temperature Warning
Your engine may be overheating. Try checking the coolant and the fans.
Battery Warning
There’s an issue with the battery, or maybe the alternator. Take it for repair as soon as possible.
Oil Pressure Warning
Either you’re running low on oil or it’s not circulating properly. Pull over, check your oil level, and top off if needed.
Brake Warning
Either your handbrake is on, or there’s a problem with the hydraulic system. Try releasing the handbrake; if that doesn’t work, get it to a repair shop.
Transmission Temperature
If this light comes on, your transmission is reaching a breaking point and needs to be checked out as soon as possible.
Tire Pressure
This can mean your tire pressure is too low or high, or could indicate a problem with the sensors. Stop as soon as possible and inflate or deflate the tires as needed.
Traction Control Light
No need for alarm: this light simply means that your traction control system has been activated.
Security Alert
This light will blink when the security system is armed, and will stay on if it’s malfunctioning and needs repair.
Seat Belt Indicator
One of your passengers (or you) are not wearing your seatbelt. Put it on to be safe, and to stop that annoying beeping.
Check Engine Light
This dreaded symbol indicates an issue with the car’s motor and/or emissions. As long as your car is still running fine, there’s no need to panic, but you should get it to the reliable mechanics at McKinney Motor Company as soon as possible. We’ll be happy to help you decipher those mysterious warnings and get you back on the road quickly.
