Ten Vehicle Safety Checks That You Can do on Your Own

Most of us do not bother to check our vehicle regularly for safety precautions, rather, we wait for something to go wrong. It does seem a little bit backward, which is why it is such an important topic to address. There is so much that can cause the vehicle to malfunction, potentially causing danger.

Brakes
Brakes have a tendency of telling you when they are about to fail. Oftentimes they will feel spongy when you press them, but they are also manufactured to squeak, grind or click, so always keep an ear out.

Exhaust System
The last thing that you want is a leak in your exhaust system, and generally, you might even smell the exhaust from the car. If you suspect that your exhaust system is leaking, you can also peek under the car while it is running and look for fumes or a loosening of the exhaust system.

Tires
Your tires should be checked every month at the very least. Air can leak out for any number of reasons; the air stick can get banged around, causing leaks, or there could be a nail in your tire. More importantly, you should always be aware of the treads on your vehicle. Important developments in tire technology have resulted in substantial improvements in tire tread and safety.

Windshield
The windshield system is one of the most overlooked when it comes to automotive safety, yet it is one of the most important. If you have ever waited too long to replace your wiper blades and got caught in a storm, then you very well know how dangerous it can be. Not all wipers are equal. So, don’t just choose the most cost-effective one, do your research or ask your service manager. Wiper fluid is equally important for keeping your windshield clean and clear, always keep a backup.

Seat Belts
While they save lives, defects have been known to occur and you want to check all of your seat belts regularly. Over time, buckles can wear out or become defective, retractors regularly stop working and plastic parts can break.

Mirrors
You should always make a habit of checking your mirrors before driving your vehicle; if one of your mirrors is out of alignment and you happen to be in a tight spot and have to swerve, you may need to rely on that mirror in the flash of a second.

Lamps and Reflectors
It could be difficult to tell if a headlamp is no longer working, particularly during the daytime. Reflectors often get cracked, making them inefficient. Take a minute to walk around your vehicle and check on your lighting system.

Horn
It may be rare, but it is possible to have your horn break down. This may be your last-ditch signal to warn other drivers before an accident.

Spare Tire
Would you drive a vehicle without insurance? Then you should always check your spare tire to ensure that you a) have it filled with enough air, and b) have the tools necessary to change the tire. Consider it your insurance policy against a flat!

Auto Club
For the low-cost of even the most basic memberships, the Auto Club Membership. is your best insurance against break down.
